Mixing ‘A Humdrum Star’ – by GoGo Penguin
We’re very proud to welcome back Blue Note Record’s GoGo Penguin, with producers Brendan Williams & Joe Resier after working with them on the bands last two records (‘V2.0’ on Gondwana Records 2014 & ‘Man Made Object’ on Blue Note 2016). This time to mix their new 4th album, ‘A Humdrum Star’.
Brendan & Joe are fans of the 80 Hertz ‘Jefferson’ live room, and have made great use of it’s acoustic by using it as a reverb chamber. On A Humdrum Star, they used a Neumann KU100 binaural head (head-related stereophony) to record the ‘re-amped’ feed from our Neve Genesys console to a Turbo Sound monitor array, that triggered the room’s natural reverb, which was then recorded to help glue the record together. Digital reverbs have their place, but there is not much beating a reverb chamber for depth and sense of space.
The Manchester-based trio, Chris Illingworth, Nick Blacka, and Rob Turner combine hard-hitting jazz with electronica to from an exciting richly atmospheric alt sound in the jazz crossover space.
